Rough animation, Line Art, and Color of 8 Ball by John Auguste
Rough animation, Line Art, and Color of Tennis Ball by John
Animated in Clip Studio Paint
Project Description:
This is a portion of my first project in Animation Basics. This is hand-drawn, frame by frame animation made in clip studio paint. The main focus of this exercise was to demonstrate the weight, hardness and an texture of two different ball types in motion.
Development Process
Reference Material
I researched reference footage of both types of balls falling at the same time to observe how the behave differently. I also found reference of a tennis ball from all angle to ensure the design was accurate as I was animating it rotating. Lastly I found reference for the 8 ball so that I can reflective shine on the ball was as accurate and believable as possible.
Rough Animation
I made a rough sketch of the animation to experiment with the motion and timing of the animation
Line Art Pass
I did a pass of clean line art on a new layer and locked down the movement. I added some emphasis on the impact, exaggerated the motion, and gave the bounces a more realistic trajectory
Full Color and Background
Once I am happy with the motion I add the base color, shadow, highlight and specular highlight on each ball. The base color layer is also where I drew the patterns for each ball and used the references to ensure consistency in the appearance of the each ball while in rotation. Then I drew the back ground and the cast shadow underneath each ball
